I have been cosplaying for almost five years now and had my fair share of wig experiences. I also experienced people asking me for wig choosing tips and what brand would be good for them. I had my fair share of wig disappointments as well, and so since a couple of friends of mine requested me to do so, I'll do a mini review of the wig brands that I have experience of using.
Take note that this is based on my personal view. Other people might think otherwise.
WIG CHOOSING TIPS:
I only have two tips to give...1. Know what kind of wig you prefer. Some cosplayers like their wigs smooth. Some like it course. Some like their fibers thin and some like it thick. It all depends on your preference.
2. KNOW THY BUDGET. Some wigs eat a lot of cash... well... MOST of them do, so prepare your budget beforehand because different wig brands have different price ranges too.
REVIEWS:
1. FML - If you're looking for COLOR ACCURACY, FML is your best friend. However, it can be a bit hard to manage/style sometimes. I had to retouch my wig every thirty minutes during one of my shoots. The fibers are pretty thick and they don't fall off easily. The wig has a strap inside to prevent your wig from sliding off your head as well.
2. Misaki Wigs - I'm not exactly sure if this brand is being catered to countries other than the Philippines. I suppose it does since the wigs technically comes from China. Anyway, these wigs haven't disappointed me yet. My Neko (K Project) wig that I got was very soft and thick - thick enough that it ends up sliding off my head despite the strap inside because of its heaviness. The Morgiana (Magi) wig that I got was equally soft, and my Aoba (DMMr) wig was simply goregous and soft and I simply adore how the gradient blends in. The only thing that I can say against it is probably their red shades are quite vibrant and can appear shiny if you put it under strong light. Other than that, I love the wigs that I got from them. The price is budget friendly too.
3. Lucaille - User friendly wigs. Thick fibers... Kinda course and not very soft, but very very stylable. My lucaille wig has served me well until now. xD
4. L-email - The wigs that I got were quite thick and soft. Depending on the lighting, the wig might appear shiny at times. I love these wigs though... very!
5. Jiuwihu - I know that I made a review about this wig brand before. I can't say much about their short wigs. Some of them may be thick. Some might be thin. It's technically a hit and miss. Their long wigs easily tangle. Just moving a bit will require you another combing session. In contrast, their short wigs are rather easy to maintain. Their wigs are relatively cheap and budget friendly.
6. Vogue Royal - Another wig brand that I only see in the Philippines. Some say that it's the same as the Coswig brand, some say it's not. These wigs are a hit and miss at times. Though most of the wigs that I got were good, I see some people comment that their wigs were thin. This wig does have somewhat thin fibers, and if you're not careful, they may shed. Despite that, the wigs itself are pretty nice to work with. Once again, another wig brand for those in budget.
7. Grand Young - I have only experienced using a GY wig once, and my experience wasn't exactly a good one. The wig that I used was a Hatsune Miku wig, and though I simply adore how pretty it looks like, the pigtails were easily tangled and quite hard to maintain. I needed a combing session every time I did a pose that required me to "move the hair". GY wigs are fairly priced though. You pay for what you get.
...well these reviews were all based from personal experience and may differ from person to person. I suggest that you ask a friend to let you see a wig from the brand that you want to buy to see the quality for yourselves before you buy. Unless you're not afraid of a little adventure by buying wig brands that you're not familiar with...like what I'm doing right now. Haha!
and what about ghostcos, bluebeard, and raincos? have you tried it?
